Macon Music!

Over on Facebook recently a couple of my friends have spoken of their memories of being able to listen to 45's in sound proof booths at the old Macon Music downtown.

I don't quite remember that but my memories wrap around taking 6 guitar lessons from a young man named Floyd Sunderlik (sp) - but I was so impatient. He wanted me to play "Mary Had A Little Lamb" and I wanted to play Beatles songs. So I took my $25 guitar we bought there and began teaching myself with a chord book I bought from Macon Music.
When Mom would need to go somewhere like Carson Pirie Scott & Co. or Sears, I'd ask to be dropped off at Macon Music. I would walk around looking at all the wonderful instruments they had; pianos, drum kits, guitars of all sorts, violins, clarinets (I played the clarinet for about 15 minutes in 6th grade at Parson's). They had small box containers that held all sorts of guitar picks and strings!
Macon Music was in an older building - I don't know the history of the location and would love to find out! It had a musty yet not unpleasant smell that also included the smell from the instruments!
A few years later, K's Merchandise Mart opened a store downtown and they sold some instruments which competed with Macon Music. I bought two guitars from K's and rarely went back to the music store. I know it closed and I'm not sure what is there now but I'll always have my memories of Macon Music!

  1. Heh, i bought my first '45' there. It was either teeny weeny polka dot bikini or purple people eater. Great novelty songs, huh?

But you are right. When shoppers world opened, i stopped going to macon music and went to shoppers world.

    My mistake.

  2. I forgot about Shopper's World! That's where I bought Sgt. Pepper mono for $3.47! (or was it Community Discount world by then?)

  3. I remember both, very well. I need to scan them but I have some Top 40 sheets that were published by WLS that Macon Music had. The listening booths rocked & that's where Mom bought my clarinet. I have albums bought at Shopper's World (cheaper that at Macon Music).
